About Me:
I'm a grad student at Penn State University in their Geographic Information System program. I am very interested in aerial photography as it can be incorporated into real world scenarios. I am just getting into rc planes and am very excited about the possibilities.

Affordable GPS Locator

I think I found a solution to make sure I don't lose my plane.
The family locator plan by sprint, https://sfl.sprintpcs.com/finder-sprint-family/faq.htm.

I've been thinking of upgrading my phone and we have an extra line with no phone attached to it. So this should be perfect. Of course the new phone will have to have its shell taken off, after all all I need is the gps, an antenna and a way to turn it on and off.

This in conjunction with an audible alarm should give me som…

First Flight

Today there was a slight wind with occasional gusts of wind. I'm not sure how fast the gusts of wind were, but I would say they were fast enough to move the leaves on a tree, tussle your hair and perceptibly move the trunks of the palm trees. I was thinking it might be too windy but I was going to have a go at it anyway.

Found a soccer field, with about 300 yards to the road on one side and 50 yards on the other to a canal. Launched the plane, it flew grand except at that point a gust o…

EasyStar is here

Came home last night to a a long box on my patio. Lo and behold the EasyStar had come. Very easy to put together, had it done in about 30 minutes. Kinda disappointed with some of the components, like the recharger. What the heck, this is the first recharger I've ever seen where you have to hook it up to your car battery!? I'm not sure what the logic behind it is.

I remember somebody saying they put their camera in the fuselage, not exactly sure where I am going to put the A10. However I…

Getting the components

At the suggestion of David Riallant I went ahead and hunted around for a gps logger. Found and bought a Holux M-1000, very excited. That is until I realized I bought a gps receiver with no logging feature, groan. Oh well it didn't cost that much and I'm sure I'll find a use for it eventually.

Also went about bought two broken Pentex Optio A10's, the lcd is broken on both of them but they both take pictures and I can download the images. Not sure if I will fix the lcds ($40 for the parts…

GPS System

If I go with the standalone camera I am going to need to get a GPS system and then correlate the pictures and gps log later to geotag my pictures. There are a few programs that should work to do this, see http://copiks.com/software/photomapper/ and http://www.locr.com/.

However what gps system should I use? Many of the sites either use a recreation gps or integrated gps/autopilot. Wouldn't a oem gps be cheaper and weigh less? See https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=161 and http://w…

Glad you got it worked out to get your own plane. We really don't to be in the business of selling hardware. We are GIS guys remember ;) ... So more power to all of you who can get this setup yourself. We are really concentrated on getting the data captured turned into real geodata that can be delivered into a proper GIS.

There are huge communities of these First Person View (FPV) and Kite Aerial Photography (KAP) types, so I am spending the time to recruit existing hobbyists to this site and get them to contribute their photos and/or vids, and get them geotagged so we can check them out and get a sense of place. but they can easily be turned into geodata collectors with the right incentive!

We are glad to see all of this in the GIS community too. Check out some of the members of this site! This guy Chris Anderson is the Editor in Chief of Wired!

Anyway, glad you have joined us, and we cant wait for your first images!

Take it ez,

Jeff

Hey Ed, We were going to send you a mail about this new site, but glad you found it yourself. Check out the http://diydrones.ning.com/ site too for Autopilot Designs. Have you got a plane ready to fly yet? If so, tell us about it! We have been testing on an N75 which you can get from AT&T for much less than an N95. The software runs 'ok', but a bit slow on this device.
